YEAR 6 MEMORIAL CERAMICS PROJECT: Last Thursday, two ceramic
artists visited Gardenvale Primary School to assist with the Year 6 Memorial
Ceramics Project which was started in 2004. Lilach Mileikowski, a parent at
our school and Steve Howkins, a ceramics teacher who has taught in the UK and at
TAFE colleges, set the Year 6 students working on their amazing buff raku
totems. Students used 100ml PVC pipe as a sleeve for their clay cylinder and
they then proceeded to create some extremely terrifying faces, intended to ward
away any ?evil spirits? from our playground! Buttons, lids, gumnuts, sate sticks
and toothbrushes were just some of the objects used to embellish the design and
the results are really fantastic! Once bisque fired, the students will then
glaze and decorate the totems, which will be placed in their position in the
Senior School courtyard in Term 4. Stay tuned for further

YEAR 6 MEMORIAL CERAMICS PROJECT: Well the moment finally
came last Wednesday, when our Year 6 2004 commemorative tiles were added to the
library entrance inside the courtyard on the Senior Campus. Lilach Mileikowski,
(a ceramic artist and parent at our school), and her husband Danny, (a landscape
designer) attached the tiles to the existing brickwork and the stunning
terracotta, pale green and white glazes, blend in perfectly with the heritage
colours of the surrounding buildings. These tiles will be a wonderful way of
remembering the students who graduated in 2004 and it is hoped that when they
return for visits in the years to come, they will be reminded of their years at
Gardenvale Primary. A new project for this year’s exiting Grade 6 students
is in the pipeline, but if anyone has an excellent idea or has seen a similar
idea at another school, we are very keen to hear from you!! Thanks of
course must go to Lilach for her amazing expertise, support and advice and for
giving up so much of her time to get this project up and running! Thank you
Lilach!!! Thanks also to Danny for gluing the Tiles! Gardenvale Primary
School is extremely fortunate to have parents who have such visions for
celebrating our students’ achievements. Onward and Upward
