The Studio

"EARTH" studio is situated in the suburb of South Caulfield, Melbourne. Seven years ago, Danny my husband & I decided to renovate our home. As I was studying ceramics at the time, we thought it would be a good idea to incorporate a studio in our renovations. The new space got more operative & emerged into a fully functional studio. Today, the studio contains two electric kilns, one large & one small, the latter is used mainly for glaze testing.  There is also a pottery wheel & a spray booth, designed by me to the dimensions & requirements of the studio. It has a large working area with various shelving to hold the work in process & display finished pieces. Techniques used Hand forming and wheel forming are employed simultaneously in the creative process.  Some pieces will be an incorporation of slab building & wheel throwing elements. Most of the wheel thrown pieces will have hand built additions to them. Some of my sculptures precipitate the use of paper clay for the creation of more complex forms, and require the continuous drying of the figure with a fire torch during the building process.  As the composition forms, I am able to add soft clay to the leather-hard shape. The clay surface is treated by the application of oxides, under glazes & printing techniques.   The last few years, I have been experimenting with incorporating copper metal in my work. The copper sheets are treated with acid & different atmospheric conditions to create a variety of effects. Glazing becomes another adventurous component in my creative process as I develop & mix them myself.  The work is fired a number of times until it reaches the desired result.
